I have a studio that I have built on the rooftop of my apartment.  It overlooks the Yamingshand mountains - a constant source of inspiration.\u003c\/p\u003e  \n\n\u003cp\u003eThis particular bowl was thrown in the wabi sabi style.  Wabi sabi is a Japanese term that means finding beauty in the imperfection.  I believe an asymmetrical tea bowl adds more character.  We as humans are imperfect and this thought goes into my work.   A tea bowl should also be able to tell a story or at least leave one open for interpretation.\u003c\/p\u003e  \n\n\u003cp\u003eWood firing is an unpredictable process.  Wood is burnt over a four day period to heat the kiln to about 1,070 degrees Celsius.  During this time, the wood ash falls on pots in random places and then turns into a glaze.  The whole kiln is entirely heated by wood.  It is a turbulent time.  When this tea bowl was fired a small chunk of another pot fell into the pot.  This piece is now part of the bowl.  You can feel it inside the chawan.  Some people  celebrate this chance happening, saying it adds to the story of the handmade fired piece.  Other people do not like it. I have always loved making tea bowls.  Over my 19 years of living in Taiwan I have come to appreciate tea and the tea culture.  In my travels to Japan I made every effort to study the famous tea bowls throughout their country.  I hope the tea bowls that I make embody the spirt of humbleness and beauty.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThis particular bowl was made from local Taiwanese clay and then wood fired in the middle\/north of the country in an area called Miaoli.\u003c\/p\u003e  \n\n\u003cp\u003eWood firing is highly unpredictable.  Wood ash from the logs of wood fall onto each pot in random ways, resulting in a glaze.  The firing process doesn't stop for a 4 day duration.  That is why many wood fired pottery can be quite expensive.\u003c\/p\u003e  \n\n\u003cp\u003eI attempted to made this bowl in the classic Japanese style - simplicity.\u003c\/p\u003e  \n\n\u003cp\u003eI hand carved the foot, adding to the uniqueness of the chawan.  My seal is stamped inside this foot ring. Just after glazing, I dusted wood ash over the pot.  During the firing, the wood ash combined with the glaze to produce a purple, gold, and amber coloration.  Parts really do look like stars.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eI also hand-carved the foot ring to show the hand of the maker.  I believe the potter's hands need to be present in a tea bowl.
