This chawan was made on the potter's wheel in my small workshop here in Taiwan.
I used local Taiwanese clay and then applied a black glaze. Just after glazing, I dusted wood ash over the pot. During the firing, the wood ash combined with the glaze to produce a purple, gold, and amber coloration. Parts really do look like stars.
I also hand-carved the foot ring to show the hand of the maker. I believe the potter's hands need to be present in a tea bowl. I love making tea bowls as each seems to grow its own personality throughout the making process.
The concept of beauty in imperfection resonates with me.
