Black Chawan

This tea bowl was made in my small pottery workshop on the roof of our apartment in Taiwan. Our view overlooks the Yamingshan mountains which are a constant source of inspiration.
This bowl was made from Japanese porcelain clay. I then applied a jet black glaze and just after glazing I dusted wood ash over sections of the bowl. During the firing to 1260 degrees, this ash melted and added a second glaze effect of speckly 'stars'. The glaze is best revealed in the sunshine.
I love making tea bowls as I find each develop their own personality on the wheel. They then go through a transformation while trimming and then after coming out of the kiln, have their final say.
