This large chawan was wheel thrown in my small pottery workshop in Taiwan. I have always loved making tea bowls. Over my 19 years of living in Taiwan I have come to appreciate tea and the tea culture. In my travels to Japan I made every effort to study the famous tea bowls throughout their country. I hope the tea bowls that I make embody the spirt of humbleness and beauty.
This particular bowl was made from local Taiwanese clay and then wood fired in the middle/north of the country in an area called Miaoli.
Wood firing is highly unpredictable. Wood ash from the logs of wood fall onto each pot in random ways, resulting in a glaze. The firing process doesn't stop for a 4 day duration. That is why many wood fired pottery can be quite expensive.
I attempted to made this bowl in the classic Japanese style - simplicity.
I hand carved the foot, adding to the uniqueness of the chawan. My seal is stamped inside this foot ring. A foot ring is an important feature of a tea bowl, so I was conscious of creating one that displayed character.
Be the owner of an original, handmade tea bowl from the beautiful island of Taiwan.
